How to dice

Dicing turns a vegetable into tidy, even cubes — great for scrambles, soups, and anything that should cook quickly and evenly. It's just three sets of cuts.

Why it matters

Small even cubes cook fast and spread flavor through a whole dish — perfect for peppers, onions, and sweet potatoes from the bag.

Step by step

  1. 01

Slice the food into flat planks of even thickness.

  2. 02

Stack a couple of planks and cut them into long strips.

  3. 03

Turn the strips and cut crosswise to make cubes.

  4. 04

    Aim for a consistent size — about a half-inch is a good all-purpose dice.

You'll know it's ready when

  • Cubes are roughly uniform, so they cook at the same rate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Uneven planks, which throw off every cut after.
  • Rushing — go at a comfortable, steady pace.
