CalAIM lets Medi-Cal managed care plans offer medically supportive food and nutrition as a cost-effective alternative to traditional services.
Under CalAIM (California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal), the state authorizes a menu of optional Community Supports that managed care plans can elect to offer as cost-effective substitutes for higher-acuity care.
Two of those Community Supports are directly Food Is Medicine: Medically Tailored Meals / Medically Supportive Food and a related nutrition pathway. Eligible Medi-Cal members with qualifying chronic conditions can receive home-delivered, dietitian-designed meals and groceries through participating plans.
