How to mash

Mashing breaks soft food down into a smooth or chunky spread — cooked sweet potato, avocado, or beans. A fork is all you need for small amounts.

Why it matters

A simple way to make naturally creamy textures without cream or butter — like mashed sweet potato as a side or a base.

Step by step

  1. 01

Make sure the food is soft — cook starchy vegetables until fork-tender first.

  2. 02

Press down firmly with a fork or potato masher.

  3. 03

Work across the bowl, turning as you go, until the texture is even.

  4. 04

Stop when you reach the smoothness you like — a few lumps are fine.

You'll know it's ready when

  • The texture is even with no large firm chunks left.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mashing food that isn't cooked soft enough — it stays lumpy and hard.
